The Battle of Verdun was one of the major battles during the First
World War on the Western Front. It was fought between the German and
French armies, from 21 February – 18 December 1916, on hilly terrain
north of the city of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France. The
Battle of Verdun ended as a French tactical victory. However, it can
also be considered a costly strategic stalemate. Verdun is a rich
purple with many faces. It has subtle differences in its base colour
and even if it shows an eye or not. It does well in both sun and
shade and has produced some lovely flowers with much thicker and wider
cream edges than itself.
